Tanzania Glanmalure Natural Exotic

Tanzania Glanmalure Natural Exotic

Here is a natural, quite like any other, in both the cup and the wildlife. When cherries reach their peak ripeness, at Glanmalure there is competition with nature to harvest them. In this case, the competition comes in the form of baboons and they just know when the cherries are ripe. No refractometers are needed to measure the Brix (sugar content or ripeness) there then.

This is far from the wild and boozy likes of other naturals. Glanmalure natural is anything but a typical natural to drink.

Lucky for us this lot missed the crater auction earlier in the year. This is as close to exotic as we have cupped from Glanmalure and so far from its usual output. There is no espresso recommendation below as I believe it is just better in all things filter.

Top Trumps

Farm: Ngila Estate.

Area: Arusha Northern Tanzania

Process: Natural (and shade-grown)

Varietal: Kent

Altitude: 1560-1640 Meters above sea level

Roast: Light filter.

(Filter) Cup potential:🥣

Aromatics: Red Berries and cosy | Body: Light |Acidity: Raspberry, black grape, and champagne |

When hot and tasting it for the first time, it is guesswork to wonder, just where this is going to go. From the cosy aromatics, this opens into some summery black grape and red fruity combination that elevates into the most elegant acidity we have in the roastery. Champagne is not out of the way as a descriptor. This is like fruit purity and on another vibrant level from Vera’s other coffees. This has come at a price, but it can show just how great a producer can be as well as the fact that not all naturals have to be boozy, ripe to the point of ferment.  I sense that I may be getting carried away here. This is great.

Recipe: 60-65g a litre. Stunning in a cupping bowl, cafetiere or V60.

Farm Info

The Ngila Estate is based on the slopes of the Ngorongoro crater and they have been growing coffee for over 100 years. Ngila has a set-aside 80 hectares of preserved rainforest that reaches 1800 meters above sea level. Ngila is certified by the Rainforest Alliance and uses natural insecticides, like Neem extract, and mineral fertilisers.

Glanmalure is the name of a specific area of Ngila and this is a well-developed lot from the main crop that is representative of the farm. Ngila determines the trees that they are going to pick using a Brix meter, picking is selective and sorting is very intensive.
